Keep Winter Clothes Smelling Fresh

Want the secret to clothes coming out of storage smelling as sweet as when they went in? Silica gel packets. You know, those little throwaways that come with new shoes or electronics. The drying agent inside those small packets attract and trap order-causing moisture. When placed in an airtight container, silica gel will keep away mold and musty smells for at least a year.

Stay-put secret for slippery seat cushions

Your new chair pads are comfy, but do they move around every time you sit on them? Quick Fix: Take a piece of non adhesive shelf liner and cut a square about 2 inches smaller than the cushion. Place it on the seat under the upholstered pad. The rubbery texture of the liner provides traction between the chair's slick surface and the fabric, ensuring the cushion stays put. Since no glue is involved, you can remove as needed.

Remove candle wax from carpet

Reader tip: First remove as much of the wax as you can by hand after it has dried. Then place a piece of brown paper bag over the wax in the area you want to clean. Then go over it with a warm iron. Keep the iron moving, and move the paper often. The heat from the iron melts the wax, and the brown paper wicks the wax OUT of the carpet. Repeat until it is gone.

Remove tough bunt-on food from your cookware

Reader tip: Put 1/4 cup laundry detergent into your pan and dissolve in warm water. (Fill the pan to about l/3 to 1/2 of pan capacity. Put the pan on the range and boil slowly for about 15 minutes. Let the pan cool a little, and then take a spoon or spatula and scoop the burn right out of the pan. This has worked for me every time.

TV Dusting Tip

Do you get tired of dusting your TV every time you turn around? Right after you dust, take a fabric softener sheet that has been used in your laundry and rub it all around the area that you don't want to dust anymore! Instead of attracting dust, your TV repels it.

The Sprits that stops the kitty from scratching.

To prevent kitty from sharpening her claws on your furniture, coat her favorite targets with a citrus scent (like Febreze Fabric Refresher on couches, curtains and carpets; lemon scented furniture Wipes on wood). The zesty smell of citrus fruit is offensive to your feline's sensitive nose and will keep him away.

Deodorize your toilet bowl while you sleep and save money too!

After a long day, you notice that the toilet bowl in the rarely used guest bathroom isn't looking or smelling very fresh. Not only are out-of-town guests arriving bright and early the next day, but you're exhausted and really not in the mood to clean. Just drop a vitamin C tablet (1,000 mg) into the bowl and allow it to work overnight. The ascorbic acid in the water-soluble vitamin dissolves alkaline deposits while neutralizing any unpleasant odors. A quick flush in the morning is all it takes for a fresh-smelling and sparkling-clean toilet.

Money Saved: $5 per tablet of automatic bowl cleaner
